Building model tanks, planes, cars and trains is a hobby that has been enjoyed by countless generations of young boys and their dads. Whilst many more ‘modern’ toys have taken over from this pastime, there’s still a healthy market in the hobby as proven by the sheer number of new construction kits that are released by the major manufacturers every year.
Airfix, Revell and especially Tamiya are probably the biggest designers and manufacturers of these kits in a big variety of scales. The 1/12th versions are very large and detailed. Some of them are even motorised with realistic gunfire sounds and lights. Other makers create accurate toy model tanks that are designed to be played with, but more often than not are kept unopened by collectors who hope to see a rise in prices, especially on limited edition versions.
If you want model military vehicles of modern or historic tanks, armoured cars, jeeps or even military scenery to create a battle diorama, there are plenty of traditional model shops and online retailers who can offer wide choices. They can also supply accessories such as paints, glues, brushes and books of modelling tips. Pre-built radio controlled model tanks are popular too, and some will even fire a dummy shell from the tank barrel!
